As an organisation that specialises in professional development for executive coaches, and training leaders in using a coaching approach to leadership and management, this is a question we come across often. And there’s no right answer. Which programme to choose often comes down to the importance you place on certain elements of the programme. If you’re looking for professional training which is in-line with competency development models such as the ICF’s (International Coach Federation) or the EMCC’s (European Mentoring & Coaching council) and others, then a professional skills based course is the way to go. While there is some differences between competency frameworks produced by different organisations there is a lot of consensus on what these coaching competencies should be. At HumanTechnics we use something we call the HumanTechnics ‘Model Coach’, which is a competency framework which is both general (enough to be aligned with some of the more established competency frameworks in the industry), while being specific enough to provide a framework map during our training sessions. Attending a coach training course that’s skills and practitioner based is what we would recommend and it’s important to remember that organisations such as the ICF only recognise training time that’s delivered in person and focused on developing key coaching competencies. This rules out distance learning programmes and programmes primarily aimed at theoretical perspectives. University accreditation. This has become an important element for many people choosing an executive coaching course. The value of most accreditation is about trusting the quality of the programme and to trust that the investment in the professional development will be valued by your current or future coaching clients, future employer or colleagues . So it’s about representing yourself as a coaching professional. It’s important to understand the additional value of the process of completing a programme accredited by a University. While HumanTechnics coach training workshop days focus on coaching competency development, we expect our programme graduates to have a solid understanding of the coaching literature, and to have an opinion of their own about theoretical perspectives. This is about being a rounded professional and it’s an important part of the training. Feelings relating to writing essays ease quickly as progress is made! ILM Level 7 Certificate in Executive Coaching & Leadership Mentoring. HumanTechnics added the ILM Level 7 accreditation to our Advanced Certificate in Executive Coaching programme at the beginning of 2009. Since then we’ve become the ILM’s leading provider of Postgraduate level 7 programmes and currently the only training centre with direct claims status at level 7. From a practical point of view it means that we understand the qualifications and assignment elements and are very good at supporting students through the qualification process. The ILM Level 7 Certificate has gained reputation very quickly and is now quite an important award to hold, particularly if you work with, or in, the public sector. The coursework elements provide a clear focus for development and the ILM assignments are much more about extending the opportunity for development as compared to University coursework which still has its roots in comparing students against each other and it being about performing in the test. The downside of the ILM Level 7 is that the qualification is not the training, and it’s important that people choose the training with the qualification rather than just the qualification as all programmes are not the same! I have a very specific view of what a perfect, rounded executive coach training course should look like, as I’ve been involved in creating them for quite a long time. The fact that HumanTechnics programmes focus on the development of core coaching competencies in line with leading industry bodies, has a key focus on the development of reflective practice, carries accreditation at Postgraduate level from Bristol Business School, requiring a focus on both personal development and theoretical perspectives, and has the option of the ILM Level 7 Certificate in Executive Coaching and Leadership Mentoring, is not by accident but very much because this reflects my views and the views of my team. It’s our focus and it’s something we do very well.
